May 6, 2018-The High Powered Committee for Integrated Development of Bagmati Civilisation (HPCIDBC) plans to build new drainage systems for five more polluted rivers in the capital, in a bid to clean the stinking rivers in Kathmandu.
The panel has completed 90 percent of laying drainage pipeline work in Bagmati River and 60 percent in Bishnummati River.
The panel plans new drainage system for Nakhu, Hanumantey, Balkhu and Karmanasa rivers that flow with drain water, a panel official said. The Committee’s Senior Division Engineer Yogendra Chitrakar said, “If everything goes as planned we shall start work within two months. We have already published notices in the newspapers for the project.”
Drainage system work will start after one month following the bidding process.The committee under the Ministry of Urban Development has laid drainage pipelines over 20km between Gokarna to Balkhu in Bagmati River. The project began in the fiscal year 2007/2008.Around 8km of pipeline work, from Balkhu to Sundharighat, remains. The ongoing Ring Road expansion work and electric poles below the Balkhu Bridge hinder the installation work, he said.
The committee’s former chairperson, Kishor Kumar Shakya, had told the Post two years ago that work would complete last fiscal year. However, the remaining work is in a limbo for various reasons.The remaining 40 per cent of drainage pipeline work for Bishnumati River has stopped because of squatters’ settlements in Balaju and Gongabu. The government has failed to evict the illegal settlers.The pollution and piling of waste will reduce once these drainage systems start working. These rivers have religious and cultural importance for Nepal’s Hindu community as well as ecological value for Kathmandu.
