Malaysian man among two held with banned Indian currency


May 8, 2018-Police raided the Kings Casino in Dhangadhi, Kailali, on Sunday and arrested a Malaysian man and the casino manager in possession of banned Indian currency.

Malaysian national whom police identified just as Azauujin and the casino manager, Sujan Dahal, were arrested along with demonetised Indian currency of denominations 500 and 2,000 with a face value of IRs 200,000 and NRs 1.2 million.

A police team led by DSP Bir Bahadur Budha Magar had raided the casino based in Sathi Hotel following the information that the casino had been operating illegal Hundi business, a form of money transfer.

 “The Malaysian man and the casino manager have been transported to Kathmandu where they will be probed by the Department of Revenue Investigation,” said SP Binod Ghimire.

Kailali police had previously raided the same casino and confiscated obsolete Indian notes of denominations 500 and 2,000 with a face value of IRs 1 million.

The casino mainly attracts Indian clients from across the border.

Police said they were tipped about transaction of banned Indian notes at the casino.

Besides being a gambling hub for Indian tourists, Dhangadhi is also turning into a haven for Indian criminals, according to the District Police Office.

“We have launched a special security campaign to check criminal activities in Dhangadhi,” said SP Ghimire.
