Nepali cargo trucks stranded after Indian customs refuses to grant clearance


Mar 9, 2018-Hundreds of Nepal-bound cargo trucks and fuel tankers have been stranded at Nepal-India border after the Indian Customs Office at Bhitthamod, Bihar refused to grant clearance for the second consecutive day on Friday.

As many as 32 fuel tankers of Nepal Oil Corporation (NOC) heading for Nepal after loading Oil at Birauni of India have been left stranded on the Indian side of the border since Thursday.

According to NOC Mahendranagar depot staff Bishweshwor Yadav, among the 32 tankers stranded, 21 are carrying 1,212,000 litres of diesel and 11 are carrying 112,000 litres of petrol.

He said that a total of 13 tankers were stranded on the India side till Thursday and the number has risen after more tankers reached the Indian side on Friday morning.

Similarly, hundreds of goods carrier vehicles that are stranded on the Indian side have caused traffic congestion at Bhitthamod. Normal life in the area has been adversely affected due to traffic congestion along the Charaut Bhitthamod-Sitamadi road section.

Nepalis who reached Indian market to purchase daily commodities have also been facing problems.

The Bhitthamod Customs Office said that some rays of hope have emerged after the new software started functioning partially.

According to Customs Office staff WM Purti, the vehicles will be granted clearance once the software starts functioning normally.
