‘Regional galleries in the works’

Feb 8, 2018-Basanta Utsav, a three-day workshop and exhibition of regional folk arts concluded on Wednesday, at the Itahari Culture Centre. Organised by the Department of Folk Arts of Nepal Academy of Fine Arts (NAFA), the event saw participation of over a 100 local artists, while 11 artists were honoured as well.

According to the organisers, the event celebrated the folk arts that originate from the eastern region of the country. “I believe the fine arts sector across Nepal will flourish in the coming years,” said Ragini Upadhyay, Chancellor of NAFA, who inaugurated the programme, “The academy is working towards creating an environment of growth and development for local artists.”

Upadhyay also put light on the fact that the Academy plans to build state-level art galleries across all regions, “There’s much to do at the administrative level, but the artists themselves need to be loud and proud in claiming their rights and making their demands heard,” she iterated.

“The event is organised to aid and encourage the development of the fine arts sector in the Eastern region,” said the President of the event Subodh Chandra Das.
