NPC set Three Star title showdown


Feb 2, 2018-Nepal Police Club (NPC) set the Aaha-Rara Gold Cup football tournament title showdown with Three Star Club after defeating Dharan Football Club 1-0 in the semi-finals on Thursday.

Suman Lama scored the only goal from the penalty spot in the 23rd minute to win the second semi-final match. Lama hit at the bottom left to score the decisive goal  to take his tally to three goals and level with Bishwas Shrestha of Three Star. Referee Sudish Pandey awarded the spot kick after Roman Limbu brought down Rabi Paswan inside the area.

Dharan’s manager Ashok Rai said that the penalty was unnecessary. “Every team must accept referee’s decision but the referee awarded needless penalty,” said Rai who was otherwise satisfied with his team’s performance. Despite conceding ab early goal, Dharan came up with well organised show and swift passes but they failed to get on the scoresheet. Goalkeeper Satrughan Chaudhary was instrumental in protected the NPC lead by many numerous save to deny their opponents.

NPC coach Ananta Raj Thapa said his side executed the match strategy properly. “Dharan was not an easy opponent to beat since they have already stunned Tribhuvan Army Club in their last match,” said Thapa, who was full of praise for the team lacking a proper preparations.

Five-time champions NPC and the Lalitpur-based outfits square off on Saturday. It will be the ninth appearance in the final of the tournament for the departmental team. Four-time champions Three Star, who have never lost the title battle here, had registered 5-0 win over Baridhara FC of Bangladesh in the first semi-final on Wednesday.
