Durbarmarg gang rape: Police recommends suspension of Inspector Thakuri

Feb 2, 2018-Metropolitan Police Range, Kathmandu, has recommended the Nepal Police Headquarters to suspend Inspector Laxman Thakuri of Durbarmarg Police Circle.

Thakuri stands accused of not registering a gang rape case that occurred in Durbarmarg-based Landmark Hotel on January 25, and trying to settle the case with financial transaction.

Sub Inspector Chandra Bhandari of the police circle was suspended on Thursday.

It has been learnt that statement of Thakuri is being recorded regarding the incident. Durbarmarg Police Circle chief and DSP Tilak Bharati too has been summoned by the Metropolitan Police Range for recording of statement.

Four men had raped a woman in Landmark Hotel on January 25. One of the men is said to be the woman’s boyfriend. The next day, the woman went to the Durbarmarg Police Station, but Inspector Thakuri did not register her complaint and told her to settle the issue with the perpetrators of the crime.

However, in the recent developments, the woman has claimed that the incident was not rape. Evidence gathered by the Post shows the woman, in the first few days after the incident, has consistently maintained in formal statements including medical reports that she was gang raped.
