Sankata enter quarter-finals

Jan 8, 2018-Sankata Club of Kathmandu shoot Dharan Football Club out of the Khaptad Gold Cup football tournament on sudden death penalties to enter the quarter-finals in Dhangadi on Sunday.

Dharan could have made to last eight had not Dharan winger Prakash Budathoki squandered a penalty during regular period of match. Dharan were awarded the spot kick after a Sankata player handled the ball inside the area. The match was then directly decided from the spot kicks after regulation time ended in a goalless deadlock.

Both Sankata and Dharan scored three out of five goals in the penalty shootout forcing the match to be decided in sudden death. Both the teams scored the first shots but Dharan missed out on the second as goalie Binay Shrestha denied Roshan Khadka. Shrestha, who also made a penalty save in regulation time, was declared the-man-of-the-match.

Anil Gurung, Bishwa Adhikari, Saroj Dahal, Sujit Thapa and Avishek Rijal converted from spots in the penalty shootout for Sankata. Sushil Lama and Bhusan Subba failed to covert for the winners.

For Dharan, Bartaman Rai, Roman Limbu, Suraj BK and Prakash Budathoki converted from spots during shootout. Sanjay Rai and last spotkick taker Roshan Khadka were denied by Sankata goalie Binay Shrestha.

Sankata will now meet Nepal Armed Police Force Club in the quarter-finals on Wednesday. Three Star Club will take on Jhapa XI in the pre-quarterfinals on Monday.

The tournament has remained goalless in the regulation time for the third day in succession since the event kicked off on Friday. In the tournament opener hosts Sudhur Paschimanchal XI edged Chyasal Youth Club on penalties and on Saturday Nepal Armed Police Force Club beat Sahara Club of Pokhara again through the spot kicks.
