Dr KC arrested


Jan 8, 2018-A team of Kathmandu Police Range on Monday arrested Dr Govinda KC from Maharajgunj-based Tribhuvan University Teaching Hospital, Kathmandu.  The team left shortly after the Supreme Court issued an order to Nepal Police directing to arrest the agitating doctor and present him before the court on Tuesday morning. Dr KC is detained at Singha Durbar Police Circle after the arrest.

Dr KC began his 14th hunger strike at the TUTH premises on Monday demanding resignation of Chief Justice Gopal Parajuli. Dr KC brought to Singha Durbar Police Circle on Monday evening. A single bench of SC Justice Dambar Bahadur Shahi directed the police to present Dr KC before the court on a contempt of court case. The statement issued by Dr KC and the news reports published in online media are rude and scornful at the judiciary and justice and falls in the ambit of contempt of court, the court statement read. Earlier today, SC section officer Netra Bandhu Poudel lodged a contempt of court case against Dr KC. Dr KC began his 14th hunger strike on Monday demanding the resignation of Chief Justice Gopal Parajuli. Dr KC, who had staged 13 rounds of hunger strikes in past demanding reforms in country's health education and medical sector, resorted to the strike following a Supreme Court order directing TU to reinstate Dr Shashi Sharma as the dean of Institute of Medicine (IoM).

Speaking at a press meet today, Dr KC had accused the chief justice of being 'a corrupt individual having links with mafia'. Dr KC begins 14th hunger strike Dr Govinda KC, a senior orthopedic surgeon at Tribhuvan University Teaching Hospital (TUTH), has begun his 14th hunger strike from 4pm on Monday demanding the resignation of Chief Justice Gopal Parajuli. Dr KC made the decision following a Supreme Court order directing TU to reinstate Dr Shashi Sharma as the dean of Institute of Medicine (IoM). Speaking during a press meet on Monday, Dr KC accused the chief justice of being 'a corrupt individual having links with mafia'. Dr KC, who has put forth five-point demand this time, has sought the resignation of CJ Parajuli and a probe into his conduct. His other demands include—formation of Medical Education Commission, continue the tenure of Dr JP Ajrawal as the Dean of IoM, sack TU officials including Dr Shahsi Sharma. The crusader has already staged 13 rounds of hunger strikes demanding reforms in the country’s health education and medical sector. A division bench of Chief Justice Parajuli and Justice Dipak Kumar Karki, hearing on a writ petition filed by Dr Sharma against his removal from the post without citing any concrete reason, had issued an order to Tribhuvan University to reinstate Sharma as IoM dean on Sunday.

The TU Executive Council on January 10, 2014 had appointed Dr Sharma as the Dean of IoM. But after Dr KC's hunger strike and widespread criticisms from various quarters, the then Chairman of the Council of Ministers Khil Raj Regmi had ordered TU to relieve Sharma as IoM dean on January 22, 2014.
