Police enter quarters
Jan 27, 2018-A solitary goal from Suman Lama steered gave Nepal Police Club (NPC) a 1-0 win over Jhapa XI and a place in the quarter-finals of the Aaha-Rara Gold Cup football tournament in Pokhara on Friday.
Lama struck the decider in the 13th minute to eliminate Jhapa in their first match of the tournament. Lama cut past Jhapa defenders Dilen Loktan and Niraj Basnet before firing in past helpless goalkeeper Kishore Giri. Giri, however, kept Jhapa in the contest by thwarting Rabi Paswan twice in the 17th and 29 minute but they still did not find the goal they sought after. NPC custodian Satrughan Chaudhary played his part to help protect the lead by denying Bikesh Limbu and Hisub Thapaliya. Jhapa coach Prabesh Katuwal said his team paid the price for fielding too many inexperienced players for the match. “Lack of coordination costs us the match,” said Katuwal. Katuwal’s NPC counterpart Ananta Thapa praised his team for their resilient performance. “The better team won today,” added the former NPC midfield stalwart.
The departmental team will play Manang Marshyangdi Club on Tuesday for a place in the semi-finals. Uttar Baridhara Sporting Club of Bangladesh will take on Far-western XI, who ousted hosts Sahara Club in the first match, in the first quarter-final match on Saturday.
