Gross negligence at Norvic: NMC yet to provide files to probe team
Mar 9, 2018-The Nepal Medical Council has yet to submit details to an expert team formed to probe gross medical negligence at Norvic International Hospital.
The NMC on Wednesday announced that two senior orthopaedic surgeons--Dr Shishir Lakhey of Nepal Mediciti Hospital and Dr Deepak Mahara, of Tribhuvan University Teaching Hospital will investigate the case.
“We have not received details of the patient. Once we get hold of the documents, we will look into the case,” said Dr Mahara on Thursday. “We were informed of the incident and statements that the doctors have recorded. Now, our decision will be based on the medical documents of the patient and procedures carried out by the doctors.”
The team has been tasked to investigate the act of gross negligence by Dr Praveen Nepal and Dr Sailesh Ranjit-kar. They had operated the wrong leg of a patient two weeks ago. Patient Bindu Poudel’s file with the hospital shows the two operated on her right leg while the problem was actually with the left. To cover up the case, the hospital made a deal with the patient’s husband saying the “hospital will bear all costs incurred in course of her treatment”.
NMC Registrar Dr Dilip Sharma said they had asked Norvic to provide all the details. “The documents should arrive here by Friday. We can then provide it to the experts.” On Wednesday, the NMC also decided to bar them from duties for another one month, until an experts’ team submits its report. Multiple officials privy to the meeting had confirmed the decision.
The NMC is yet to make the decision public. Dr Sharma said they will inform on the findings on Friday. “The decision is yet to mature. We will issue a press statement on Friday,” he said.
