UML, Maoist Centre set to finalise unification deal today

Feb 19, 2018-The CPN-UML and CPN (Maoist Centre) are likely to finalise the party unification deal on Monday. A meeting of Party Unification Coordination Committee is underway at Prime Minister’s Official residence in Baluwater this evening.

Earlier in the day, CPN-UML Chairman and Prime Minister KP Sharma Oli and CPN (Maoist Centre) Chairman Pushpa Kamal Dahal held a separate meeting. The leaders have finalised most of the issues on the modality of unification, sources said.

Following the meeting, both the leaders held separate meetings with their party leaders. According to information shared by Dahal to leaders close to him, the leaders have reached an agreement on rotational leadership of the party and the government. The leaders are likely to take the leadership of government and the party in an alternative manner. However, the unified party is likely to adopt dual-chairmen system so that the party cadres can feel ownership with the party.

It has been learnt that the leaders have almost agreed to name the party as Nepal Communist Party.

The two top leaders have reached an understanding to take the CPN-UML’s guiding principle “people’s multiparty democracy” for discussion in the general convention.
