Feb 24, 2018-Protest against the government’s decision to shift the district headquarters of Rukum (East) from Rukumkot to Golkhara has continued unabated for nearly a month now with no response from the government side.
The protesters, who have been staging a sit-in outside the District Administration Office, are enraged at the government for not paying any attention to their concern.
The Rukumkot residents began protesting immediately after the Cabinet meeting on January 25 decided to shift the district headquarters to Golkhara in Puthauttarganga Rural Municipality-12.
The protesters had enforced a banda in the district for nine days before withdrawing it after the Supreme Court (SC) on February 2 issued an interim order telling the government not to implement its decision of changing the district headquarters.
Advocate Ganesh Hamal and local people of Rukumkot Krishna Regmi and Dutta Bahadur Basnet had registered a case at the SC on February 1 challenging the government’s decision to shift the district headquarters.
In its interim order, the court had called the two sides for talks on February 11 again to defer it to March 9.
Continuous protest has affected the daily life in Rukumkot. Many people want the government to take the right decision and end the protest.
Nandalal Sharma, who is leading the protest, said he is hopeful the government’s decision would come in favour of Rukumkot.
Hunger strike continues in Birgunj; talks inconclusive
BIRGUNJ: The residents of Birgunj, Parsa, have continued their agitation for the past one and half months demanding that the town must be declared the capital of Provincial 2.
They have been staging relay hunger strike at Ghantaghar Chowk to pressure the central and the provincial governments to address their demand.
