Double League Volleyball: Clinical APF claim trophy


Feb 4, 2018-Departmental giants Nepal Armed Police Force (APF) Club claimed the Dhorpatan Women’s Double League volleyball tournament title with a straight set victory over New Diamond Academy on Saturday.

APF maintained their unbeaten run throughout the tournament and finished with 50 points, four more than runners up New Diamond, from 17 games. APF were the clear favourites going into the final league game having beaten New Diamond 3-2 in the first leg. The young guns of New Diamond failed to show their spark against a star-studded APF and lost the opening set 25-16 before surrendering 25-17, 25-12 in the next two sets. Winners APF walked away with Rs 325,000 and New Diamond received Rs 170,000. The third and fourth spots are yet to be decided.

In another match of the day, Tops Higher Secondary School of Pokhara edged Nepal Police Club (NPC) 25-21, 25-27, 25-19, 10-25, 17-15. The win lifted Tops to third with 35 points from 17 matches while Police, who have one match advantage, are fourth with 33. NPC are yet to play against Tribhuvan Army Club after the match between two teams had to be stopped on Friday at fourth set due to bad light. NPC were leading the match 2-1 and winning the fourth set 16-6.

Pratibha Mali of New Diamond was declared the best player and Sharmila Nepali of Shree Gaun Sports Development Committee, Dang, won the emerging player award. Niruta Thagunna of Army scooped player-of-the-series award and player of the year title went to APF’s Saraswati Chaudhary. All of them rode a scooter each.

Other individuals winners included Salina Shrestha (libero) and Kripa Adhikari (lifter) of New Diamond, Reshma Bhandari (blocker), Nebika Chaudhary (spiker) and Gyanendra Bista (coach) of APF, Kopila Rana (quicker) of NPC and Aruna Shahi (server) of Tops.
