UN spl rapporteur arrives

Jan 29, 2018-UN Special Rapporteur on human rights of migrants Felipe González Morales arrived in Kathmandu on Saturday on the invitation of government of Nepal. He is scheduled to start his work from Monday.

During his weeklong stay here, Morales will be meeting with senior government officials looking after the migrant issues as well as representatives of various non-government organisations working in the field of migrant rights.  Foreign Ministry Spokesperson Bharat Raj Poudel said that the visit would disseminate a message that the government of Nepal is committed to rights and facilities of the migrant workers and that it is sensitive towards the protection of human rights. “Inviting UN Special Rapporteur on a Nepal visit at a time when the country has moved ahead towards political stability and development is very significant,” Poudel said. The government has invited other two rapporteurs along with the special rapporteur which underlines it is committed to protection and promotion of human rights, he added. During the visit, the rapporteurs are scheduled to meet government officials responsible for migration and labour, international organisations, as well as aspiring migrants and returnees and their families. Morales will present a comprehensive report of the visit to the UN Human Rights Council in June 2018.

In a press release issued by the Human Rights Council from Geneva, Morales has thanked the government of Nepal for giving the opportunity to make this visit.  He expressed belief that his visit would be fruitful in the context that 1,600 workers leave Nepal for foreign employment through official channels every day.
