Kathakanksha 2 culminates in a dance extravaganza

Jan 28, 2018-The second edition of Kathakanksha—Kathakanksha 2: Expanding the Horizons—which is a workshop on the classical Indian dance form Kathak, culminated on Friday with a show at the Rastriya Nachghar in the Capital.  The workshop, organised by Aesthetic Dance Studio and mentored by the Studio’s co-founder Namrata KC, took place over a month, where the participants were led through basic and advanced courses of the dance form.

The workshop featured 12 dancers, both novices and experts, who together with mentor KC performed at the final show, themed Expanding the Horizons.  This is the second edition of the workshop, which kicked off in 2016; the first workshop was titled Kathakanksha: A Night to Wish.  The show on Friday kicked off with KC honouring three special guests present at the show—senior dancers Honey Shrestha, Suresh Mishra, and Manoranjan Joshi.  The principal show was divided into two rounds. The first round was a musical, narrated by KC, which entailed a 30-minute long show about the origin of Kathak dancer in north India, its evolution, and the various forms it has taken now, alongside its different dynamics in Mughal empire and its contemporary forms.  The second round of the show was about the various practices of Kathak dances as a medium of storytelling in contemporary Nepal. The show featured a dramatic rendition of the story of Rajendra Laxmi Devi Shah, the first queen regent of the Shah regime.

The shows featured dancers and workshop participants Manisha Basnet, Kunti Simali, Nainika Mishra, Rity Darshandhari, Renu Yogi, Sameer Shakhadev, Sarswoti, Sujita Adhikari, Rekha Phago Limbu, Dinesh Mangmu, Shruti Aryal and Aarohi Sharma.  The group behind the show, prior to the event, had produced a play titled Jyanmaya, based on an epic poem by Sharubhakta.
