Deuba under pressure to summon CWC meeting
Jan 22, 2018-Prime Minister and Nepali Congress (NC) President Sher Bahadur Deuba is under pressure to summon the party’s Central Working Committee (CWC) meeting at the earliest to review the election results.
Leaders from the establishment faction including senior leader Ram Chandra Poudel and some of the leaders close to him on Monday put pressure on Deuba to summon the party’s CWC meet. However, NC leader Bimalednera Nidhi said that it would not be good to call the meeting to review the election results before the National Assembly (NA) election. Nidhi drew the attention of party President Deuba saying that the environment of the NA election would be spoilt if the party focused on reviewing the election results. “The House of Representative election hasn’t got its final shape,” Nidhi said, adding, “It will be better to hold the Central Working Committee meeting after the completion of House of Representative and National Assembly elections.”
Leader Deuba, however, said that he was ready to summon the CEC meeting. Deuba himself is in a great confusion after leaders floated differing views in the meeting, according to a Baluwatar source. Central member Bal Krishna Khand, who is close to the Deuba faction, said that the party should summon the CWC meet to review the elections results. Saying that youth leaders have been criticising the leadership for the electoral debacle, leader Khand opined that the CWC meeting should be called to pacify such criticisms. The leaders even have been demanding the change in leadership and special general convention. Though Deuba is ready to summon the CWC meeting and general convention, he is in a dilemma whether to call before or after the NA election. Saying that action should be taken against those who betrayed the party in the elections, he opined that the meeting should be called to discuss the issue as well.
Leader Paudel echoed Deuba’s statement that stern action should be taken against those who betrayed the party in the parliamentary and provincial elections held on November 26 and December 7. Meanwhile, former General Secretary Krishna Prasad Sitaual expressed his dissatisfaction over the remarks of party General Secretary Shashanka Koirala. During a programme held in Pokhara recently, Koirala had said that the left alliance should be torn down. “Being the General Secretary of the party Koirala should not have made such remarks,” said Sitaula.
