Jan 5, 2018-Three persons have died of suspected hypothermia in Saptari in the last one week, as winter advances across the country. Binod Kumar Yadav, the ward chairman of Chhinnamasta Rural Municipality-1, said Kuldip Raya, 36, and Ramdayal Ram, 35, died on Monday and Tuesday respectively while Rajiyadevi Ram, 72, had died a couple of days earlier than the first two.
The apparent cause behind their deaths was cold weather. Four persons have died of suspected hypothermia in the southern plains so far this winter. An unidentified homeless man was found dead on the street of Chandrauta in Kapilvastu on December 17. Meanwhile, daily life in the Tarai region has been greatly affected because of cold wave conditions accompanied by dense fog. Patients suffering from cold-related diseases are increasing in health facilities. Chief District Officer of Saptari Bhagirath Pandey said that the temperature in the district has plummeted sharply over the last couple of days. Cold wave has also hit the western Tarai districts like Banke, Bardiya, Kailali and Kanchnapur.
According to the Attariya field office of Department of Hydrology and Meteorology in Kailali, the minimum and maximum temperatures for the district were recorded at 9.5 and 10 degrees Celsius on Thursday.
