18 landslide displaced families get land deeds
Jan 11, 2018-Eighteen landless families living at Khorsanibari in Barhabise, Sindhupalchok, have received land ownership certificates. These families were rendered homeless after their settlements at Gati Bhirkuna and Sigarche in the district wiped out away by landslides that were triggered by the 2015 earthquake and its aftershocks.
Two organisations, Bhumi Adhikar Manch and Samudayik Aatmanirbhar Sewa Kendra, had taken the initiative to provide these families with land plots. Sarita BK, who was displaced from Gati Bhirkuna, said she would build a small home for her family on the land. “We no longer have to live as landless from now onwards,” she said. Dil Bahadur Sunar, another landslide displaced, said his family had been squatting on a private property for the last two years. “We had nowhere else to go after the landslide. We are grateful to Bhumi Adhikar Manch and Samudayik Aatmanirbhar Sewa Kendra for providing us land,” he said. Sunar’s family has received six aanas of land (roughly 91 square metres) to build a new home.
Jagat Basnet, programme manager of the Samudayik Aatmanirbhar Sewa Kendra, said it took them six months to find the land for the families displaced by the landslide. “The land was bought with the support of the National Reconstruction Authority which is also helping the displaced families to build new homes,” he said.
