UML, NC at odds over fixing provincial capitals, governors

Dec 14, 2017-The CPN-UML, which has emerged as the largest party in the House of Representatives and Provincial Assembly elections, has warned the Nepali Congress-led government against taking hasty decisions on temporary capitals of the seven provinces and governors.

Speaking at a function on Wednesday, UML senior leader Madhav Kumar Nepal said the ‘caretaker’ government should not designate province chiefs.

“It would be unethical on part of this government to appoint province chiefs and representatives that is likely to have far-reaching consequences when a fresh public mandate has emerged in the country,” Nepal said.

Earlier in the day, NC leader Bal Krishna Khand said that as meetings of Provincial Assemblies will take place ahead of the Federal Assembly, the government needs to fix the temporary capitals of the all seven states to convene those meetings. “And the first meetings of Provincial Assemblies cannot take place without the appointments of Governors. So these two tasks are very important for the government,” Khand said.

On Monday, the UML General Secretary Ishwor Pokhrel had warned Chief Secretary Lok Darsan Regmi and other civil servants concerned not to be engaged in such decisions, adding that such decisions would be revoked by the new government under the left alliance.
