Kalikot under curfew again after 2-hr respite

Dec 25, 2017-The local administration continued curfew order in Manma, the district headquarters of Kalikot, on Sunday after lifting it for two hours in the evening.  The indefinite curfew has been clamped since Saturday as protests against the Friday’s killing of a Myadi Prahari (temporary police) turned violent.

The District Administration Office (DAO) imposed the curfew effective from 8pm. Keeping in view hardships of people due to long curfew, the DAO lifted curfew from 8-10 in the morning and 6-8 in the evening.  The Myadis hired for election security and the local people were enraged after a Myadi recruit Bibek Aidi died in police firing on Friday during a protest against alleged pay cut. The 22-year-old, a resident of Raskot Municipality, was shot in his head. The local administration said it lifted the curfew to allow the locals to commute and buy daily essentials.  Chief District Officer (CDO) Badrinath Gaire said the indefinite curfew order was continued as the situation seemed unlikely to limp back to normalcy. “The curfew has been clamped suspecting that the protest could turn violent,” he said, adding that the curfew order would be lifted soon after the situation returned to normalcy.Police suspected that activists of the Netra Bikram Chand-led Communist Party of Nepal infiltrated in the protest and provoked violence.

An all-party meeting on Sunday failed to reach an agreement. CDO Gaire said the meeting could not reach to a consensus over the issue of declaring the victim a martyr and where to carry out postmortem—in the district or Kathmandu. The deceased’s family said that they would not receive the body unless the government declared him martyr. The body has been kept on the DAO premises.
